CHANGING RHYTHMS: WORKS BY LELAND BELL, 1950s1991 This beautiful, full color catalog contains a powerful collection of American painter Leland Bell's distinctive figure groups, portraits and still lifes comprising the accompanying exhibition of Bell's works. Included are a number of previouly unpublished portraits and other works by the artist, who on occasion during his career actually repainted works after they had already been photographed for use in print. As stated by exhibition curator and List Gallery Director, Andrea Packard, "Searching for poetry instead of novelty, Leland Bell focused on three traditional subjects: still life, portraiture, and figure composition. Adamant and often arrogant in arguing his beliefs, he was modest in his subjects, choosing to paint the people and things around him that he loved most..."

GERMAN
EXPRESSIONISM (19121929): GRAPHIC WORKS Rich in content, this catalog provides an authoritative resource for understanding both the works which comprised the 2001 OUMA German Expressionism exhibition, as well as their historical roots and context. Dramatic changes in art took place during the period covered by this exhibition. Time-honored traditions, including clear representation of the visible world and standardized notions of beauty, were challenged and changed. Among the most formidable challenges to the status quo were the ones put forth by the German Expressionists. Images included in this catalog capture the heightened emotional content expressed in aggressive colors and daring shapes which is the main component of this style of art.

RANDY HAYES: THE WORLD REVEILED Randy Hayes' unique approach to painting combines the stop-action immediacy of photos with the timeless commentary of painting to produce provocative, many layered images. Using a series of snapshots to present a scene from all sides and perspectives, Hayes then "veils" the photographs with images rendered with semitranslucent washes of paint. The haunting effect of multiple views and moments invites the viewer to participate in the drama of the painting. This beautiful, hardbound catalog includes 76 high quality color reproductions of Randy Hayes' paintings, along with a chronicle of the artist's life and work written by poet and art critic John Yau. (John Yau is also known for his highly acclaimed book on artist Jasper Johns.)

THE GRAND TOUR: LANDSCAPE AND VEDUTA PAINTINGS, VENICE AND ROME IN THE 18TH CENTURY The truly magnificent paintings reproduced in this catalog are considered to be among the finest masterpieces of each artist included in this stunning exhibition curated by London's Walpole Gallery. As wealthy English travelers came to culturally rich Italy during the eighteenth century, many commissioned the best Italian artists of the day -- Canaletto, Panini and others -- to paint naturalistic cityscapes and landscapes, in order to provide them with a lasting memento of their adventures. In our century, these masterpieces of documentary-like visions by 18th century Italian painters of their most picturesque cities -- Venice and Rome -- provide a compelling panorama of times and places uncontaminated by modern industrialization and commercialism.

HERMANN HESSE: NOVELIST, POET, PAINTER Hermann Hesse did not just write. He lived a creative, productive life to its fullest extent, and arrived at balance through the process of self-search, in part by involving himself in the act of watercolor painting and drawing. Seeing his artwork is like the opening of a door to a mystery one did not even know existed. Suddenly the genius of this Nobel Prize winner becomes broader and even more profound. The artworks you'll find beautifully reproduced in this catalog reveal the depth of this honored creative individual who wrote almost as fluidly as he thought, and as you'll see, painted and drew at nearly the same intensity.

THE
SPIRIT AND THE FLESH: In the increasingly secular and artificial time in which we live, realism paradoxically can offer a mode of transcendence. Not all realism is spiritually uplifting, but in some instances, the spectator's connection to the materiality of a scene can be transformed into a meditation on, and communion with, the world and the ineffable. Such is the case with the paintings of the contemporary American realist painters whose work is presented in this catalog. This exhibition brought together for the first time the superb work of artists Ben Long, Richard Maury, D. Jeffrey Mims, and Nelson Shanks. Their art offers the viewer a medium for the elevation of the spirit above and beyond, yet rooted in, everyday life.

FOUR
FROM MADRID: In no other place have spiritual ideas been given such earthy forms as in Spain. The modern day works of Gustavo Isoe, Francisco Roa, Bernardo P. Torrens, and Dino Valls featured in this catalog can be seen as a continuation of both the high level of mastership and the traditional themes of old Spanish realist art. Reality for the Spanish masters has always exposed the shadows in life. Unlike the celluloid world of Hollywood, there is never a totally happy ending, because they study and live life with spiritual intensity and devotion to truth. These artworks pulsate with life in its full spectrum -- they are rich in color and texture, palpable to the senses, and highly energizing.

Historically, East and West have had to face and respond to the same puzzles and challenges of life. The echoes of their interpretations are crystalized in works of philosophy, music, literature, and art; ultimately, in man's aspiration for self-perfection and beauty. This catalog beautifully captures the works of art, mostly sculpture, from 12 countries, which came together in the 1986 exhibition, "The Many Faces of Buddha" held at Oglethorpe University Art Gallery. Recently the West's growing interest in and study of the East have brought about a better understanding of the "light of Asia." The works portrayed in this full-color catalog, along with the insightful commentary included, aspire to contribute to the depth and eloquence of this understanding.
