One of
the most outspoken proponents of "art for art's sake,"
Whistler is recognized as one of the most original and influential
painters of the 19th century. His etchings now are considered
some of the finest since Rembrandt. Whistler's work is in most
major museums throughout the world including the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Louvre in Paris,
the British Museum in London, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and
the Museum of Fine Art Boston.
