From
commentary by Stephen Addiss, Zen
No Sho: The Calligraphy of Fukushima Keido Roshi, 2003,
Clear Light Publishers
"The Zen Master Fukushima
almost always writes his calligraphy in running-cursive script,
tending toward fully cursive. That means that the strokes in his
characters are simplified and joined together, so that the character
mu, which
ordinarily takes twelve strokes of the brush, is completed in
one gesture. It seems fitting that this word for 'no/not/nothing'
that is so important in Zen training becomes a single form in
his calligraphy." |
