In keeping with our motto, "Knowledge
Through Beauty," Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
has brought Atlantans, as well as visitors from throughout
the world, artworks which have both informed and exhilarated
them. Whether Buddhas from around the world, paintings by
Russian master Nicholas Roerich, or sculptures of American
master Duane Hanson, it is our intention that the artworks
shown provide a meaningful experience for viewers, lifting
their spirits and satisfying their souls.
In addition to the Museum's impressive
permanent collection
of fine art, three originally conceived and curated exhibitions
are held each year, featuring artwork which is international,
representational,
often figurative
and spiritual
in nature. Exhibitions such as
The
Mystical Arts of Tibet - Featuring Personal
Sacred Objects of the Dalai Lama,
The
Grand Tour - Landscape and Veduta Paintings,
Venice and Rome in the 18th Century, and
Four
from Madrid - Contemporary Spanish Realism
have garnered national media attention
and brought international art experts from around the world
to lecture on campus. To view our complete exhibition history,

Oglethorpe University Museum of Art
is a unique and valuable resource for all students, especially
art students. Since OUMA is the only small liberal arts university
museum in the entire Southeast which regularly shows nationally
and internationally recognized exhibitions, it offers OU students
the advantage of seeing international culture first hand within
steps of their classrooms. This direct, personal experience
of art enlightens the viewer and compliments information presented
in books and slides. Many alumni continue to cherish their
experiences in our Museum long after graduation. OUMA is a
rare asset on campus, facilitating the university in fulfilling
its goal of providing a high level of liberal arts education.
Occupying the entire third floor of
the Philip Weltner Library, the Oglethorpe University Museum
of Art opened in the spring of 1993, after extensive renovations
of the previous Oglethorpe University Art Gallery (1984-1992).
The Museum, which covers 7,000 square feet, offers a comfortable,
intimate environment created by two spacious galleries, and
an inviting Gift Shop
featuring items of beauty from throughout the world. It has
become an important cultural addition to Atlanta's growing
art scene, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
