The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is pleased to present the newest exhibition from the private collection of Shelley and Donald Rubin. Featuring more than fifty works, the collection highlights creations from some of India's most famous artists, including Francis Newton Souza, Sakti Burman, and Seema Kohli. The imagery seen in Goddess, Lion Peasant, Priest focuses on India's people: individual characters inhabiting spaces both urban and rural gazing back at us, meditating and praying. The collection is a testament to India's place as a progressive and modern force in the contemporary art world.

Students Draw the Line... Against Prejudice
January 16 - February 13, 2011 |
In partnership with Atlanta non-profit Embracing Differences, Oglethorpe University is proud to present Students Draw the Line... Against Prejudice. The exhibition showcases works created by a diverse palette of local schools (from elementary through high) that promote tolerance. As provocative as it is progressive, the collection engages and enlightens viewers to the many areas where prejudice can permeate and corrupt, while calling immediate attention to this growing epidemic on a national and local level. Ultimately, the goal of the exhibit is to get people thinking and talking in order to trigger a shift in the perception and attitude around our city. Nineteenth Century French Master Drawings and Sculpture from the Schlossberg Collection
September 25 - December 12, 2010 |

Portrait of Anatole Dauvergne
Thomas Couture
|
Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is pleased to exhibit more than 100 rare pieces from the private collection of Dr. Michael Schlossberg. The exhibition serves as a glimpse into one of the most comprehensive private collections in the country and features the early works of many famous French artists such as Degas, Delacroix, Gauguin, Ingres, Pissarro, Renoir, Rodin, and Seurat. With the value of the drawing and sculpting craft dropping off in the 20th century under the guise of experimentation, the Schlossberg Collection is an excellent demonstration of how great and rare true draftsmanship is and acts as a welcome break from today's obsession with computers and digital designs.
Utrillo: The Magic of Montmarte
May 20 - September 5, 2010 |
Rue de Labrenoir Montmartre
Maurice Utrillo |
The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art is proud to present eight never-before-seen works by French painter Maurice Utrillo from the private collection of Drs. Isaac and Yolanda Melamed. Born and raised in Montmartre, Utrillo used oil paints to create colorful vignettes of life in northern Paris. His images are highly evocative of a more rustic lifestyle that transports viewers to a simpler and slower-paced time.

September 17 - December 17, 2006 |

Flora Crowned |
This exhibition, Slow Painting: A
Deliberate Renaissance, explores a new art movement
focused on highly skilled figure painting harkening back to
the Old Masters of Europe. The exhibit brings together
over 40 contemporary paintings and drawings by 22 artists.

into the future. With its attention to detail and beauty,
slow painting is very rapidly gaining recognition as a bold
new movement and is being lauded as New York’s new "fast".

Lama-Yeshe Dorje |
This exhibition, Portals to Shangri-La:
Masterpieces From Buddhist Mongolia, marks the 800th
anniversary of Genghis Khan's founding of the United

Fourth
Graders Visit OUMA |
On Nov. 4-5, 2004, seven classes of Paulding County fourth
graders visited the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art,
along with the Georgia Shakespeare Festival, for a day
of the arts. The children toured the Museum and learned
about the current exhibit, Nicholas
Roerich: The Mystical Journey. Museum Director Lloyd
Nick greeted the young visitors and shared background
information with them about the Museum and the university.
Next, museum docents spoke to the children about Russian
master Roerich's paintings. The children asked insightful
questions and impressed museum staff with their knowledge
of art and global facts.

Alicia Rodriquez with Museum Director Lloyd Nick at
OUMA |
Alicia Rodriguez, President
of the International Committee of the Banner
of Peace, recently visited Oglethorpe University Museum
of Art in advance of the upcoming Nicholas Roerich exhibition.
During the 1920s, Russian artist Nicholas Roerich composed
a treaty with the assistance of international legal experts,
designed to protect treasures of cultural heritage worldwide
from the ravages of war and neglect. This treaty came to be
known as The Roerich Pact, and its accompanying banner, also
designed by Roerich, is known as the Banner of Peace.
