Rodin: In His Own Words features thirty-five bronzes by Auguste Rodin complemented by an installation on the lost-wax casting process and a selection of original letters written by the artist. Rodin's works in this exhibition include: The Thinker; Monumental Head of Saint John the Baptist, The Spirit of War, First Maquette of The Burghers of Calais and Head of Balzac, Penultimate Study.
Of special educational importance, the ten step lost-wax process of Rodin's Sorrow is also displayed. When Rodin created his sculpture Sorrow, he used this process which starts with a sculpted model, generally made of plaster, clay, marble, stone or wood. An impression of the sculpture is made, then fireproof clay, hot wax, wax pipes, investment mold and molten bronze are used to complete the piece.
The film, The Gates of Hell, is being shown continuously in the museum. Iris Cantor co-produced this 53-minute documentary about the first lost-wax bronze casting of Rodin's The Gates of Hell. The film was shot in Brussels, Florence, Rome and the Coubertin Foundry in France, and it recorded the four-year casting process. It premiered in 1981 and is the recipient of multiple awards, including the CINE Golden Eagle, the Blue Ribbon Award and the CHRIS Award. The film will be included in the exhibit.
This exhibition is organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
