Experience OUMA Collects: Selections from the Permanent Collection in the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art’s 360-degree virtual tour.
This exhibition highlights selected works from the permanent collection of Oglethorpe University Museum of Art that align with current course offerings.
The permanent collection of OUMA is unique in that it has been composed almost entirely of works of art that have been donated rather than by purchase. The goal of the museum’s permanent collection is to benefit our students and faculty by utilizing the collection’s pedagogical value and to bring the classroom into the museum.
The permanent collection continues to expand thanks in large part to the continued generosity of our donors. Alongside collection favorites such as our 14th century Japanese Amitabha Buddha, OUMA Collects 2020 presents a new print acquisition by Romare Bearden to complement a growing number of mid-century and contemporary works of art by African American artists.
Collection highlights are paired with several private loans to align with our fall course offerings including many which address issues of ethnic diversity and inclusion such as WGS (Women and Gender Studies) 290: Anti-Racism Activism; POL (Political Science) 290: Black Feminist Thought; and SOC (Sociology) 306: Race & Ethnicity in the US.
