“My artwork participates in Immigrant Rights activism by centering the humanity of Undocumented Americans as we grapple with the criminalizing nature of this country’s immigration system. Through ‘Yehimi Cambrón: Documenting the Undocumented in the South,’ my first solo exhibition in Atlanta, I explore a range of personal and political struggles that refuse any singular narrative of what it means to be an immigrant.

There’s a harrowing weight to the circumstances surrounding Undocumented People that can be easily missed by those who don’t face the fragility of this precarious status. The intimate nature of the work in this exhibition exposes those circumstances and creates space for grief and for healing and joy as forms of resistance.

‘Yehimi Cambrón: Documenting the Undocumented in the South’ expresses the nuances of family togetherness, the sense of home found in the arms of immigrant mothers, the heartbreak of anti-immigrant violence, the transformative fire of resistance against oppression, and the kindled warmth of communities who survive and thrive together — a swarm that knows its collective power.”

“Mi trabajo participa en el activismo por los derechos de los inmigrantes al centrar la humanidad de las personas indocumentadas mientras lidiamos con la naturaleza criminalizadora del sistema de inmigración de este país. A través de ‘Yehimi Cambrón: Documentando al Indocumentado en el Sur,’ mi primera exposición individual en Atlanta, exploro una variedad de luchas personales y políticas que rechazan cualquier narrativa singular de lo que significa ser un inmigrante.

Hay un peso desgarrador en las circunstancias que rodean a las personas indocumentadas. Aquellos que no enfrentan la fragilidad de este estado precario, pueden pasar fácilmente por alto. La naturaleza íntima del trabajo en esta exposición, expone esas circunstancias y crea un espacio para la tristeza, la sanación de nuestro ser, y la alegría.

‘Yehimi Cambrón: Documentando al Indocumentado en el Sur’ expresa la complejidad de la unidad familiar, el sentido de hogar que se encuentra en los brazos de las madres inmigrantes, la angustia de la violencia contra los inmigrantes, el fuego transformador de la resistencia contra la opresión y el calor encendido de las comunidades que sobreviven y prosperan juntos, un enjambre que conoce su poder colectivo.”
