On June 8, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art hosted ‘Hidden Treasures Unveiled,’ an Antiques Roadshow-inspired event, where attendees could bring their valuables and antiques for appraisal by specialists in fine art, decorative arts, Asian art, jewelry, and books and manuscripts.
Despite the day’s poor weather, the event welcomed 200 visitors to campus, with more than 300 items for appraisal.
“This event allowed many members of our community to learn more about the history and value of treasured heirlooms,” said John Tilford, OUMA’s Curator of Collections.
This Thai bronze Buddha was gifted to the OU Museum of Art at the event.
The art specialists were provided by Hindman, one of the nation’s leading auction houses. Hindman opened an Atlanta location in 2018.
One item appraised, a Thai bronze Buddha, was discovered to date from the 16th or 17th centuries. The work was generously donated that day to Oglethorpe’s permanent collection by museum member Ellen Stein.
“We are hoping to stage a similar event next year,” Tilford said. “We are very pleased with the growing partnership between OUMA and Hindman’s.”
All event proceeds benefited the museum and its mission as a teaching collection for students and faculty.
