"The Painter's Studio" by Jackson Owen '21

Jackson Owen
Studio Art and Art History, class of 2021

This work concerns the issues of placement and process. Pay attention to the relationship between the figure reflected in the laptop screen and his surroundings, where is he placed? What is he the furthest from/closest to? Are there multiple eye levels in the work, and what does that suggest? What is beyond the window? Where are you in relation to the artwork? Consider the relationship between art theory and one’s intuitive stream of consciousness. Classical fundamentals juxtaposed with nature. Where should one reside in order to make the most effective art? My primary linguistic and conceptual influences were Kerry James Marshall, Gustave Courbet, Romare Bearden, David Hockney, and James Whistler.
