Mission

Oglethorpe University Museum of Art (OUMA) seeks to contribute to the university’s presence and recognition in the community by featuring high quality exhibitions that are international, representational or spiritual in nature. It serves students, faculty and staff of the university as well as the Atlanta community by bringing awareness to diverse cultural backgrounds. OUMA aims to complement the city’s cultural offerings with its unique offerings. In addition, OUMA’s exhibitions are complemented by educational programming that uses art to enrich traditional classroom learning and the liberal arts curriculum. OUMA offers opportunities to assume the responsibilities of leadership in public and private life.

Vision

OUMA is both a university and a community museum which serves the students, faculty and staff of OU as well as population of Brookhaven, Georgia and metro Atlanta. The permanent collection is utilized first and foremost as a teaching collection fostering cooperative initiatives with our faculty and students. This collection celebrates and reflects the diversity of the community, both on and off campus. OUMA is a learning lab, creating first-hand, and practical opportunities for students to learn museum work as well as classes to explore museum theory. OUMA connects to community here and in the metro Atlanta area through exhibitions, lectures, concerts, film series and family free days. OUMA is committed to the social work and outreach of museums in providing community support and dynamic opportunities to improve inclusivity and diversity.
